dOCUMENTA (13) - Day One

Arrived mid afternoon in Kassel - beautiful weather and lots of contemporary art to see !
Started at one of the main venues, The Fridericianum and on the way there found some nice old staircases and Occupy camping outside the gallery.

Brilliant piece to start a cutting edge exhibition of contemporary art - Ryan Gander's piece, I need some meaning I can memorize- a gentle breeze pulling the spectator through the gallery space.

Tapestries seemed to be popular - these two by Swedish artist Hannah Ryggen from the 1930's, warning of the impending doom.

Another old tapestry by Alligheiro Boetti with smartly dressed admirer

Marianna Castillo Deball - Uncomfortable objects 2012

Llyn Foulkes playing The Machine in Kassel

Sopheap Pich - pieces made from Bamboo, Rattan, Burlap, Wire, Earth Pigment, Charcoal, Resin, Beeswax.

Large scale tapestry by Goshka Macuga - attracting a big audience.

Some Aboriginal spot paintings - this one by Warlimpirringa Tjapaltjarri

Good use of large rush mats with german phrases carved out, by Fabio Mauri.

A great DNA and Epigentic piece of work by Alexander Tarakhovsky - 60,000 genes from one individual each in a small glass vials.

On way back to the hotel, I came across some Latvian jazz players playing Summertime, with sculpture figures looking on.

Just next to the hotel in an old bank (memories of Phylidda Barlow's work last year in a grand old bank) is chalkboard work by Tacita Dean, titled Fatigues - works really well against the ornate staircases and bannisters.

Last stop today was a brilliant use of the empty top floor of C & A - with a sound piece by Cevdet Erek, titled Rooms of Rhythms 2010-2012

One changing cubicle left in situ

The route in and out of the piece takes you through C & A - very odd feeling as you leave an intense sound installation experience.

Apparently, Germany has much faster broadband than we have ...
